2007 jeep patriot review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Standard safety equipment includes anti-lock brakes, multi-stage front airbags, side airbag curtains, electronic stability control and electronic roll mitigation. as it's programmed in the patriot, the optional continuously variable transaxle (replacing the automatic transmission) is too weird to be comfortable. The same cvt is used in the jeep compass, and it works well. The independent suspension is as good as the engine, delivering steadiness and comfort in every abusive situation we could find for it, during a long day of driving on every surface from patchy two-lanes, to hard-packed dirt roads, to sandy off-road trails, to shallow rivers, to deep gullies. For the off-road parts, we drove a jeep with the optional freedom ii off-road package that makes the patriot trail rated and raises the price by about $2000. on twisty roads and maneuvering around-town, the patriot feels light and nimble. The turn-in is sharp. The body is well isolated from the wheels. This keeps the jeep under five mph and under control, going down steep hills, even icy ones. Air conditioning and cruise control do not come standard, and the windows, mirrors and door locks are manual. air conditioning is optional 850). Power windows, mirrors and door locks with remote entry are part of a power equipment group 995). Another package has cruise control. A more complete package includes all those things plus tinted windows, map and dome lights, driver seat height adjustment, fold-flat front passenger seat, reclining rear seats, 115-volt outlet, foglamps and roofrail crossbars. the limited 2wd 19,985) and 4wd 21,785) adds most if not all of the options in the groups, as well as 17-inch aluminum wheels, foglamps, passenger grab handles, chrome roofrails and other trim, and leather-trimmed seats. a continuously variable transaxle is available for the 2. 4-liter engine as well as a 2. 0-liter engine. the off-road package is called freedom drive ii, and uses the cvt with lower ratios; it adds skid plates, tow hooks, foglamps, all-terrain tires and a full-size spare tire. The freedom ii package is available for sport 4wd 19,175) and limited 4wd 23,130). options include a trailer tow prep group with engine oil cooler and wiring harness 130); a 458-watt boston acoustic premium sound system with nine speakers and steering wheel controls 495); six-disc cd 320); 6cd with navigation 1395); yes essentials seating material 250); heated seats 250); sunroof 800); and 17-inch all-terrain tires 140). safety features include frontal airbags, curtain airbags; electronic stability control, abs, electronic brake-force distribution. walkaroundthe patriot is unmistakably a jeep. It looks like a jeep all the way: more so than the stylish cherokee or big boxy commander. The windshield and backlight are relatively vertical, and the bumpers are defined and not molded into the fascia. It's almost exactly the same size as the new jeep compass but it looks more rugged, lacking the rounded edges of the gentrified compass. It looks more like a liberty, or maybe like a baby commander. It's classic, the way it should be. interiorthe seating position is high in the patriot, two inches higher than in the caliber; with the upright windshield, the forward visibility inspires confidence. Leather in the limited is great, but seems to overdress the patriot. The climate and sound system controls are easy to understand and operate. The vinyl panel, with a center stack trimmed in brushed aluminum-look plastic, doesn't try to be stylish; the lines are pretty square, but who cares? the space between the seats includes a nook for change, two fixed cupholders, and the parking brake lever. A short armrest flips up to open the main console compartment, where there's a pocket for a cellphone or ipod. It slides forward three inches for shorter drivers. the door pockets are on the small side, but can hold six cd cases; much of the space there is taken up by the six- by nine-inch speakers. The door handles are easy to use. That's the same as the compass and a couple inches more than the liberty, longest of the three. the standard rear seat is a 60/40 split that easily folds flat, by flipping up the seat and flopping down the seatback. Reclining rear seats are optional, as is a flat-folding front seat. With everything folded flat, there's a spacious 62. 7 cubic feet of cargo capacity, and room for an eight-foot-long kayak, ladder or whatever. with just the rear seats folded, there's still 54. 2 cubic feet; and with all the seats in use there's 23. 0 feet in the back, good for any compact suv. The rear cargo area is something called ultra floor, a washable and removable vinyl. No worries with dogs and lawn mowers. driving impressionchrysler uses this 2. 4-liter world engine in a lot of vehicles. Depending on things like electronic programming and the transmission that's used, it feels different each time. In the jeep patriot, it feels great. Jeep has found the power, 172 horsepower and 165 pound-feet of torque. It's all in the programming, says jeep. The same cvt is used in the jeep compass, and it's terrific. It will go from 0 to 90 mph without shifting. It's supposed to be the tachometer needle that climbs. The patriot can also lope along at 80 mph and a mellow 2600 rpm. The patriot forums, when they get rolling, should be interesting. At speeds below about 50 mph, when the cvt kicks down for better acceleration, it does so slowly and with a small thump. And often, in the mountains. the five-speed manual gearbox was a relief, a joy to use, even with its long throw. The lever comes out of the center s. Optional diesel engine expands lineup. introductionjeep promotes the grand cherokee as a full-size suv, but that's only partly true. In its physical dimensions and towing capacity, grand cherokee is a mid-size, like the ford explorer or chevrolet trailblazer. At the base level, it's priced like a mid-size. It isn't even jeep's biggest suv, as that honor now belongs to the commander. Yet it is instantly recognizable as a jeep. Inside, the atmosphere is light, comfortable, and enveloping, with lots of seat adjustment, excellent outward vision around relatively slim windshield post. All switches and controls are clearly are labeled and easy to find and use. In back is nearly 70 cubic feet of cargo space. anyone familiar with grand cherokees of just a few years ago will find that the chassis is now far more sophisticated, giving the current model much better handling than that of pre-2005 models. Its turning radius is tighter, too, good for crowded parking lots. a wide range of modern engines is available. The 5. 7-liter hemi v8 is particularly good for towing or driving at higher elevations. The high-performance srt8 model has a 420-horsepower 6. 1-liter hemi and can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in less than five seconds. The smaller, 4. 7-liter overhead-cam v8 works quite well, too, and is offered in most states with e85 flex-fuel capability, meaning it can run on gasoline or up to 85 percent ethanol. Even the standard overhead-cam v6 is quite competent. For 2006, jeep expanded the grand cherokee model range with the luxurious overland and the high-performance srt8. For 2007, jeep has added a number of refinements. Most significantly, side-curtain air bags with roll detection are now standard on all models, and all models now offer the parkview reversing camera and active turn signals. Standard tires are wider. Remote start is standard on limited and overland, and optional on laredo and srt8. Cloth upholstery is standard. Air conditioning comes standard, along with one-touch power windows, power locks with remote keyless entry, eight-way power driver's seat, am/fm/cd audio with auxiliary input jack, driver information center, 60/40 split folding rear seat, an engine immobilizer, water-resistant storage compartment, tire pressure monitor and 17-inch wheels. Standard tires are now p245/65r17 goodyear fortera, replacing last year's 235mm goodyear wranglers. Quadra-trac ii, which includes a low range, is optional 595) with the v6 and standard with the v8. It's actually smaller than a ford explorer. in appearance, the grand cherokee is modern and square-edged, with a fashionably high waistline and small side windows. The shape of the body is designed to protect the sides of the vehicle from potential road debris. Revised taillights distinguish the '07; otherwise grand cherokee's outside appearance hasn't changed significantly since '05. while conventional suvs, such as the dodge durango, are built on a separate frame like a truck, the grand cherokee uses an unusual construction scheme jeep calls uniframe, a close marriage of a welded steel unit-body and underlying front and rear modules. This is an extremely sturdy and rigid concept developed back in jeep's days with unit-body pioneer american motors. Wheels are chromed, and the front sill guards are now brushed stainless. jeep has reached deep into its heritage to revive the overland name. First built in 1903, the overland automobile was the earliest ancestor of the willys. Willys played an instrumental role in the development and production of the world war ii-era jeep, but was also the first automaker to seriously envision a civilian market for a military-style utility vehicle. The willys jeep debuted in 1946 and had its name shortened to just-plain jeep in the early 1960s. Although the jeep brand has passed through several owners since then, its lineage remains unbroken. the srt8 has a monochrome look all its own, relieved by bright trim at the belt level and bodyside and accented by enormous five-spoke, 20-inch forged aluminum wheels. Functional air ducts in its more bluff front bumper fascia improve brake cooling. Srt8 is available only in bright silver, brilliant black or inferno red. In all grand cherokees, the two-tone, dark-over-light theme set by the instrument panel flows into the door trim. the handbrake lever has a spindly, low-quality feel to it, however. new for 2007: the finish on the upper panel has been improved. The laredo has been upgraded here for '07, with the same chrome gauge rings that used to be exclusive to the limited, plus chrome-accented hvac controls and a matching-color bezel (replacing black).
